Jan van der Heijden (March 5, 1637 – March 20, 1712) was an important personality in the 17th century in the Low Countries. He was a gifted painter, he invented the use of fire hose, improved the fire engines, organised the first real volunteer fire brigade in his part of the world and wrote and illustrated the first book on the subject of fire fighting.

Peter Snellen (teacher and fire fighting historian) will tell you about his life and work and his special talents. In the museum you can see one of his fire engines, a catalogue of his paintings, a facsimile of his ‘Brandspuitenboek’ and some original prints.
