The Arts Society The Hague presenteert: Lezing in Wassenaar, Warenar dinsdag 10 maart 2020: ‘The Arts and Crafts of Kashmir’, door Zara Fleming.
Voor veel mensen roept Kashmir beelden op van een prachtige vallei, omringd door de met sneeuw bedekte toppen van de Himalaya. Voor anderen is het een land van conflicten. Minder bekend is dat Kashmir al bijna 2000 jaar van groot historische en artistieke betekenis is. Deze lezing introduceert de aanwezigen in de verbazingwekkende diversiteit van kunst en ambachten, die dit kleine gebied rijk is. Ruim aandacht zal besteed worden aan de beïnvloeding van Kashmir door boeddhistische, hindoeïstische en islamitische culturen. Zara Fleming zal stil staan bij boeddhistische sculpturen, hindoetempels, grote islamitische tuinen, schilderkunst, kalligrafie, Moghul-tapijten en Kashmir-sjaals. Ondanks zijn bewogen geschiedenis bleef en blijft Kashmir een unieke omgeving van artistieke diversiteit en religieuze co-existentie.
Zara Fleming is gespecialiseerd in Boeddhistische kunst, de Himalaya en de kunst en cultuur van Tibet. In het Victoria & Albert Museum was zij verantwoordelijk voor de Tibetaanse, Birmese collecties en die uit de Himalaya. Zij was curator van verschillende tentoonstellingen zoals: ‘In the Steppes of Genghis Khan’ in de October Gallery in London en ‘The Tiger in Asian Art’ in het Asia House. Zara sinds 1973 in Azië ook als gids en daarnaast verzorgt zij lezingen. Zij was daarnaast co-editor van ‘Masterpieces of Mongolian Art (Volume 1)’ en heeft diverse artikelen geschreven over Boeddhistische kunst en cultuur.

De lezing is in het cultureel centrum De Warenar, Kerkstraat 75, 2242 HE Wassenaar. De zaal is open om 19.30. De lezing begint om 20.00. The Arts Society The Hague (hiervoor DFAS The Hague), is een onderdeel van de Britse The Arts Society. Deze vereniging, opgericht in 1965 in Engeland, heeft als doel de kennis over kunst te verspreiden, onder andere door middel van lezingen. Hiervoor worden experts op hun vakgebied uitgenodigd. For many people, Kashmir conjures up a beautiful valley surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, for others it is a land of conflict. But what is less well known is that is has been of historic artistic importance for nearly 2000 years. This lecture introduces the astonishing diversity of arts and crafts produced in this tiny area, influenced by Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic cultures. It explores Buddhist sculptures, Hindu temples, great Islamic gardens, painting, calligraphy, Moghul carpets and Kashmir shawls. Despite its troubled history, Kashmir has fostered a unique environment of artistic diversity and religious co-existence.
Zara Fleming has a specialist knowledge of Buddhist art, the Himalayas and the art and culture of Tibet. In the Victoria & Albert Museum she was responsible for the Tibetan, Himalayan and Burmese Collections. She has curated several exhibitions including: ‘In the Steppes of Genghis Khan’ at the October Gallery in London and ‘The Tiger in Asian Art’ at Asia House. Zara has been travelling in Asia since 1973 and has been a tour guide and lecturer. She also co-edited ‘Masterpieces of Mongolian Art; Vol 1’ and has written articles about in Buddhist art and culture.
