We need to talk about theatre and disabilities

7 oktober 20212 minute read

Disabled people are rarely to be found in Dutch theatre, both on stage and in the audience. Last year’s increase in livestream performances showed that theatre shows
can, in fact, be more accessible to a variety of audiences. However, from the moment that COVID-19 measures were dropped and cultural venues reopened, this welcome
improvement quickly disappeared. What can we do to permanently make theatres more accessible?

Monday November 1st, STET organises a theatrical symposium on Theatre and Disabilities in Theater aan het Spui, Den Haag

The Nederlands vs The UK
The United Kingdom shows that a more inclusive theatre industry ís possible. International Theatre company STET (The Hague) researched accessibility in the British theatre industry. They quickly observed that venues and festivals across the country offer a variety of performances with actors with disabilities, accessible to disabled audience members. With sign language, relaxed performances and audio description: as a matter of policy, British theatres more often include shows accessible for all.

Action
On Monday, November 1st, English Theatre STET sparks the conversation between Dutch and British theatre professionals and experts by experience during theatrical symposium STET NO LIMITS: A Call to Action!. With a short play by deaf actor Jonny Cotsen and a keynote speech of Robert Softley Gale, on his work as a director of award-winning disabilityled theatre company Birds of Paradise. Including The Agenda Inclusive Performing Arts by LKCA, British Council, NFPK and Holland Dance. To not only talk about this problem, but to call to action. Visit the event or access the livestream and join the conversation!
