Farewell Date Announced for “Soldaat van Oranje”

It has been officially announced that Soldaat van Oranje will come to an end on Sunday, 12 July 2026.
After more than 20 years and millions of visitors, the production will conclude at the TheaterHangaar with its final performance.

Producer Fred Boot said the decision was emotional but deliberate:

“We want to stop at a high point and enjoy these final months together with cast, crew and audience.”

A final cast (Cast 29) will begin performances on 13 February, marking the last chapter of the longest-running musical in Dutch theatre history.

Holocaust Remembrance at Persijnhof

On 27 January, the Municipality of Wassenaar commemorated Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Jewish monument in Persijnhof cemetery.
Members of the municipal executive laid a wreath, joined by representatives of the Stolpersteine working group and the Jewish Cemetery Foundation.

Mayor Leendert de Lange emphasised the importance of remembrance across generations:

“By continuing to name people and tell their stories, we give meaning to remembrance — and speak out against antisemitism and exclusion.”

At least 99 Jewish residents of Wassenaar were murdered during the Second World War.

Municipal Council Pauses Redevelopment of Town Works Yard

Plans for the redevelopment of the municipal works yard have been put on hold after the council voted not to discuss the proposal.
Residents expressed concerns about building height, privacy, parking pressure and unclear planning frameworks, saying their input was not sufficiently reflected.

While some parties warned of delays amid housing shortages, others welcomed the pause, calling for a clearer and more widely supported plan.
Alderman Ritske Bloemendaal acknowledged the setback, estimating a delay of six to eight months, possibly longer.

Claire Tabouret Exhibition Opens at Museum Voorlinden

Museum Voorlinden opens its first major Dutch solo exhibition of French artist Claire Tabouret on Saturday, 31 January.
The exhibition focuses on themes of identity, human relationships and vulnerability.

Ahead of the opening, Wassenaarders.nl was present for an early look at the exhibition. Watch the video report.

English-Language Election Evenings for Expats

In the run-up to the municipal elections, Beers & Bites by Crooked Spider is hosting English-language election evenings on 4, 11 and 25 February.

The evenings feature short party pitches, panel discussions, audience Q&A and informal networking.
They are open to all residents — including those who cannot (yet) vote — to better understand local politics and civic participation.

4th Wassenaar Bicycle Lights Parade – Thursday 5 February

Wassenaar is lighting up again! On Thursday, 5 February, the 4th Wassenaar Bicycle Lights Parade will take place: a festive evening ride through the village with brightly decorated bicycles and plenty of good vibes.

Participants will cycle in a colourful, illuminated procession, complete with a DJ cargo bike, a hot chocolate stop along the way, and a prize for the most beautifully lit bicycle. It’s the perfect excuse to check your bike lights, keep the Christmas decorations a little longer, and finally wear that blinking party hat you never dared to use.

Programme

  • 17:30 – Gathering at Van Heeckerenhuis (soup and pancakes)
  • 18:30 – Start of the ride
  • Route length: approx. 7 km, escorted by traffic marshals

There is limited decoration material available on site, so if you’re aiming to win, decorate your bike at home.
Children may only participate under parental supervision. Participation is free, but at your own risk.

The event is organised by Fietsersbond Wassenaar, with special thanks to Fietsersbond Haagse Regio and Fonds Wassenaar.

Excelsior Marks 125 Years with New Group Portrait

During a festive reception at Raadhuis De Paauw, Excelsior Wassenaar unveiled a new group portrait, marking its 125th anniversary.

Mayor De Lange reflected on the orchestra’s long history and central role in village life.
He also suggested adding lyrics to Wassenaars Glorie, the piece recently revived for the anniversary — perhaps to be sung during future village celebrations.

The jubilee year continues with concerts, a reunion for former members, and events throughout 2026.
