Join NLdoet on 13 & 14 March

Residents are invited to take part in NLdoet, the Netherlands’ largest volunteer campaign, on 13 and 14 March 2026.

NLdoet offers a chance to support local foundations and associations for a day — whether improving care facilities for the elderly, helping create welcoming neighbourhood spaces, or supporting newcomers. Participation is simple: choose a local activity and sign up.

NLdoet is organised nationally by the Oranje Fonds and is widely supported across Wassenaar.

Municipal Council Elections – 18 March 2026

On Wednesday 18 March 2026, residents of Wassenaar will elect a new Municipal Council. The council determines local policy on housing, traffic, green spaces, public safety and municipal finances.

Who can vote?
You may vote if you:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Live in Wassenaar and are registered in the BRP
  • Have Dutch or another EU nationality
  • Or are a non-EU national who has legally lived in the Netherlands for at least five years (as of 2 February 2026)

Voting takes place between 07:30 and 21:00 at any polling station in Wassenaar. Bring your voting pass and a valid ID (which may be expired up to five years).

Every vote counts — including those of our international community.

30 km/h Speed Limit Now in Effect

As of 27 February, a 30 km/h speed limit applies to almost all roads within Wassenaar’s built-up area. Alderman Wim Koetsier officially unveiled the new road sign at Deijlerweg.

The measure follows recommendations from the Citizens’ Traffic Assembly and was adopted by a large majority of the municipal council. Five main roads retain a 50 km/h limit.

The municipality expects improved road safety, fewer accidents and greater liveability. A transition period will focus on awareness before enforcement begins. The impact will be evaluated in 2027.

Video Interview Series with Party Leaders Launches

In the run-up to the elections, our editorial team will publish a series of video interviews with the lead candidates of participating political parties.

The interviews, hosted by Ellen Klaver-Asscheman, follow a fixed format to allow comparison between parties. Topics include housing, asylum and integration, municipal finances and traffic pressure.

The first three interviews will be published next week on our website and YouTube channel. The series is organised under the responsibility of the Stichting Mediaplatform Wassenaar.

Aston Martin Valkyrie on Display at Louwman Museum

From 3 to 31 March, the Louwman Museum presents one of the world’s most extreme street-legal cars: the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

Designed by Formula 1 engineer Adrian Newey, the Valkyrie brings uncompromising F1 philosophy to the road. Highlights include:

  • 6.5-litre V12 engine (1,156 hp)
  • 0–100 km/h in 2.6 seconds
  • Top speed: 354 km/h
  • Only 150 built worldwide

The hypercar generates up to 1,100 kg of downforce and even produces 98 dB at idle. A rare opportunity for car enthusiasts.

Live Painter Janneke Wouters Captures the Moment

Wassenaar-born artist Janneke Wouters specialises in live painting at weddings and events. While guests celebrate, she paints a lasting artistic impression of the moment.

Working between the guests, she captures atmosphere rather than photographic detail. After the event, she refines the painting in her studio in nearby Valkenburg.

In addition to live work, Wouters creates abstract paintings exploring themes of growth and personal development. Her studio also serves as an exhibition space by appointment.

Council Approves 48 Social Housing Apartments

The municipal council has approved plans to build 48 social rental apartments at Van Rechterenstraat in Wassenaar-North.

The project by Wassenaarsche Bouwstichting will replace nine existing social housing units, resulting in a net increase of 39 homes. The plan deviates from the current zoning plan and therefore required council approval.

A proposal to reduce the project to three storeys and 35 apartments was rejected. However, the council did adopt an amendment requiring full compensation of 402 m² of lost green space, to be realised within three months of completion.

The project aims to increase the share of social housing in Wassenaar from 22.5% to 30%. The final building permit remains open to objection and appeal.
