Driver brakes for hedgehog, causing collision
A rear-end collision occurred on the Lange Kerkdam after a driver slowed down to avoid a hedgehog crossing the road.
The following vehicle was unable to stop in time, resulting in damage to the front car and the deployment of airbags in the second vehicle. One driver was checked by ambulance staff but did not require hospital treatment.
De Kieviten celebrates 100 years
Sports club De Kieviten is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a year of festive and sporting activities.
Founded in 1926 as a hockey club, De Kieviten has grown into a thriving multi-sport association with more than 1,800 members. The centenary year will conclude with a reunion and anniversary celebration on 7 November.
Court upholds Duindigt sale agreement
The District Court of The Hague has ruled in favour of the sale agreement for Duindigt racecourse, rejecting all claims brought by the Municipality of Wassenaar.
The ruling allows the proposed sale to Stichting Villa Betty to proceed, although a separate legal procedure concerning the municipality’s right of first refusal is still ongoing. Plans include restoring the racecourse while allowing the construction of 46 homes on part of the site.
Illyria returns with Shakespeare under the stars
The award-winning British theatre company Illyria will return to Wassenaar on 3 and 4 September with open-air performances of Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It.
This year’s performances will take place at Wijdehorst, where visitors are invited to enjoy a picnic before the evening performance begins.
Plein Musique announces summer concert programme
Plein Musique returns to De Burcht on 30 August and 6 September with four free open-air concerts.
This year’s programme includes international pop, classic rock and roll, vintage-inspired music and a tribute to the legendary band Toto, continuing one of Wassenaar’s favourite summer traditions.
Police seize sock containing drugs
A resident discovered a sock containing approximately 100 grams of drugs in a Wassenaar neighbourhood and alerted the police.
The drugs were confiscated, and police reminded residents not to touch suspicious items but to report them immediately. Officers also warned that discarded drugs can pose a serious danger, especially to children.
