Scroll down for English.

Wassenaar-based film producer wins two US awards for historical drama series

Wassenaar-based writer and film producer Michael John Fedun has won two awards at American film festivals for the pilot script of his new television series, 12:37 – The King David Hotel. The five-part drama explores the 1946 bombing of Jerusalem’s King David Hotel, which killed 91 people. Two experienced international producers have now joined the project.

Fedun received the Leo Award for Best Screenplay at the DaVinci International Film Festival in Los Angeles on September 26. The following day, he won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Teleplay at the Richmond International Film Festival in Virginia.

At the Los Angeles festival, professional actors performed scenes from the screenplay on stage. Festival founder Chadwick Pelletier confirmed that 12:37 received the festival’s highest honour in the screenwriting category.

Bombing of British headquarters

The series tells the story of the bombing of Jerusalem’s King David Hotel on July 22, 1946. At the time, the hotel also housed the headquarters of the British administration in Palestine. Members of the Jewish underground organisation Irgun carried seven milk churns filled with explosives into the building’s basement.

Although three telephone warnings were issued, the hotel was not evacuated. At 12:37 p.m., the bomb exploded, causing the southern wing to collapse and killing 91 people. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the attack.

The five-part series examines the events from several perspectives: the bombers, hotel staff, British officials and Palestinian Arabs trying to survive in a divided city.

According to Fedun, the story is not about deciding who was right, but about the people who suffered the consequences. “Ninety-one people died in a building that had been warned three times. The series does not ask who was right. It asks who paid.”

Star Wars producer joins the project

The project has attracted further international interest with the involvement of Veronika Lencová and Rick McCallum of Prague-based production company Film United. McCallum previously worked as a producer on Star Wars: Episodes I–III and the television series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Fedun developed 12:37 with writer and documentary filmmaker Nick Schönfeld and wrote all five episodes himself. The series features dialogue in English, Hebrew, Arabic and French.

Fedun has an established international career as a film producer. His credits include The Devil’s Double, starring Dominic Cooper, and Emperor, starring Adrien Brody. He was also selected for European Film Promotion’s Producers on the Move programme at the Cannes Film Festival, which promotes European film producers internationally.

Production still in development

Although all five episodes have been written, the series remains in development. Film United and Fedun are currently preparing the project for international production.

According to Lencová, the story is well suited to an international audience. She points to its multiple languages, historical setting and the different perspectives through which the bombing is portrayed.

Filming dates and distribution plans have yet to be announced.
