Ukrainian student grateful for a new life in Wassenaar

Seventeen-year-old Anastasiia Komisar, who fled Ukraine with her mother four years ago, shares her story of resilience and hope.

Now living in Villa Sijthoff, Anastasiia recently graduated from Adelbert College and hopes to continue her education before one day helping to rebuild Ukraine. Despite missing her father, brother and grandmother every day, she says she is deeply grateful for the kindness and support she has received from the people of Wassenaar.


Filmhuis and animal shelter join forces

Filmhuis Wassenaar and Stichting Nationale Dierenzorg have launched a special campaign alongside the film Gohan.

Six shelter animals are being featured in the cinema and on social media in the hope of finding them a permanent home. The campaign supports the film’s message of “Adopt, don’t shop” and encourages visitors to consider adopting a pet.


New sponsors support Zwemloop Wassenaar

The annual Zwemloop Wassenaar has welcomed two new main sponsors.

Freek van Os will sponsor the traditional swim-run event, while Barnwoodweb will support the Duintrail. Organisers hope the additional focus will help the trail run continue to grow alongside the long-established Zwemloop. Both events will take place on 30 August.


Beach Safety App updated for the summer season

Visitors to Wassenaar beach can once again use the Strandveilig app for up-to-date safety information.

The app now provides real-time information from lifeguard stations, including whether lifeguards are on duty, warning flags, beach facilities and local safety advice. The update aims to help visitors enjoy a safer day at the beach.


Council gives new coalition financial room to get started

The Wassenaar municipal council has approved the 2026 Spring Budget, including a reserve of 500,000 euros for the implementation of the new coalition agreement.

The decision followed a lively political debate, with opposition parties questioning the lack of detailed plans, while the coalition argued that the new executive needs financial flexibility to develop its proposals.


Dry weather keeps Wassenaar on alert

Wassenaar is feeling the effects of the continuing dry weather, although no restrictions are currently in place.

The regional water authority is closely monitoring water levels and quality after the Netherlands officially entered the “threatened water shortage” phase. Residents are encouraged to use water wisely while conditions remain dry.
