Dinsdag, 12 april 2022 om 20.00: Raphael: Genius of the Renaissance in Rome’ door Jo Walton

Engelstalige hybride lezing op locatie of via ZOOM. Raphael stierf, slechts 37 jaar oud, op Goede Vrijdag in 1520 in Rome. De paus, zijn meest prestigieuze beschermheer, was er zo kapot van, dat hij meende zelfs aardschokken rond de stad te voelen. Raphael werd begraven in het Pantheon, het belangrijkste klassieke gebouw van Rome. Dit werd beschouwd als een passend eerbetoon aan een kunstenaar waarvan de kunst wedijverde met de grootsheid van de Ouden en die ook nog charmant, knap en beleefd was. In deze lezing staan centraal zijn korte, maar verbazingwekkende carrière als schilder, architect, administrateur en als uitmuntend tekenaar en zijn blijvende invloed op latere kunstenaars. Jo Walton heeft lesgeven gecombineerd met een carrière in het boekenvak, waaronder de verkoop van kunstboeken. Zij was gids bij zowel Tate Britain als Tate Modern. Op dit moment verzorgt zij lezingen voor The Arts Society, het Art Fund en Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery en lokale kunstverenigingen.

The Arts Society The Hague is een onderdeel van de Britse The Arts Society. Deze vereniging, opgericht in 1965 in Engeland, heeft als doel de kennis over kunst te verspreiden, onder andere door middel van lezingen. Hiervoor worden experts op hun vakgebied uitgenodigd. Tuesday, 12 April 2022 at 20.00: ‘Raphael: Genius of the Renaissance in Rome’ by Jo Walton

This is a hybrid lecture on location and on Zoom.

Raphael died in Rome on Good Friday, 1520, aged only 37. The Pope, his most prestigious patron, was devastated and earth tremors were felt around the city. He was buried in the Pantheon – Rome’s most important classical building – a fitting tribute to an artist who rivalled the greatness of the Ancients. (He was also charming, handsome, and polite – which couldn’t be said for all Renaissance polymaths.) This lecture looks at his short, but astonishing career as painter, architect, administrator, and superb draughtsman and considers his lasting influence on subsequent artists.

Jo Walton has combined teaching and lecturing with a career in art bookselling and has been a volunteer guide at both Tate Britain and Tate Modern. Now a freelance lecturer for The Arts Society, the Art Fund, and Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery and local art societies.
