Wassenaar scouts compete in national sailing event

Scouting groups De Paauw and Van Woesik once again took part in the Kaagcup, one of the largest waterscout competitions in the Netherlands.

Around 1,500 scouts in 300 boats competed during the sailing weekend on the Kagerplassen. The event is known for its challenging conditions, teamwork and navigation skills. Several Wassenaar participants achieved strong results in different competition classes.

Traditional ring riding competition season begins

The annual Vierdorpen ring riding competition will return this summer to Wassenaar, Rijnsburg, Katwijk and Valkenburg.

The traditional horse-and-carriage competition remains a popular local spectacle, combining sport, craftsmanship and regional heritage. Participants compete for both individual day prizes and the overall Four Villages title.

The Wassenaar edition will take place on 16 August at the Berkheistraat near the market grounds.

New sunscreen dispenser installed at De Kievieten

The municipality of Wassenaar is expanding its sun protection campaign with a new free sunscreen dispenser at De Kievieten recreation area.

The initiative follows the earlier installation of a sunscreen station at Wassenaarse Slag beach. According to the municipality, skin cancer rates in Wassenaar are significantly above the national average, making awareness and prevention especially important.

The dispensers are intended as an easy reminder for visitors to protect themselves against harmful UV radiation.

Wassenaar hosts far more asylum seekers than required

New national figures show that Wassenaar is currently accommodating more than six times the number of asylum seekers required under the Dutch Spreidingswet.

While the municipality is expected to provide 150 reception places, it currently offers around 915 places, mainly due to the reception facility at Duinrell. This puts Wassenaar well above the legal target compared to many other municipalities in the region.

The Red Cross Wassenaar will organise another second-hand book fair on 30 and 31 May at De Warenar.

Visitors can browse a large collection of Dutch and English novels, history books, cookbooks, children’s books and magazines. Admission is free.
