Local cyclist takes on world’s longest cycling event for charity

Wassenaar resident Leon Koning will begin an extraordinary cycling challenge on 20 June, riding solo and unsupported from the North Cape in Norway to Tarifa in southern Spain.

The route covers more than 7,400 kilometres across 15 countries and is considered the longest cycling event in the world. Leon is raising funds for the Duchenne Parent Project, supporting research and care for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. His goal is to raise at least one euro for every kilometre he cycles.

New municipal executive officially takes office

Wassenaar has a new municipal executive following the appointment of four aldermen representing VVD, D66 and Lokaal Wassenaar.

Laurens van Doeveren, Rebecca Baart, Paut Struik and Wendy Frigge will lead the implementation of the coalition agreement Building Wassenaar Together for the period 2026–2030. The new administration will focus on housing, sustainability, mobility, education, welfare and citizen participation.

During the same council meeting, departing aldermen Ritske Bloemendaal, Wim Koetsier and Ronald Zoutendijk were thanked for their contributions to the municipality.

Healthy Youth Week promotes active and healthy lifestyles

Wassenaar will participate in the national Healthy Youth Week from 8 to 12 June.

Schools, childcare organisations, sports clubs and community partners will organise activities that encourage healthy choices, including drinking water, healthy eating and outdoor play. The mascot Druppie will visit local schools to promote water consumption, while childcare organisations are introducing new approaches to healthy celebrations and nutrition.

The initiative is part of wider efforts to help children grow up in a healthy and supportive environment.

Theatre performance explores life with dementia

Actor Eric Corton will perform the solo theatre production Pa at Theater Warenar on 11 June.

The play explores dementia from the perspective of a father living with the condition and is based on real-life experiences. Combining emotion, humour and music, the performance aims to increase understanding of dementia and highlight the challenges faced by patients and caregivers.

The production follows the success of Corton’s earlier performance Ma and addresses a subject that affects many families across the Netherlands.

World Shop volunteers celebrate successful year

Volunteers from Wereldwinkel Wassenaar enjoyed their annual staff outing, featuring local activities, a tea workshop and a barbecue.

The event also recognised several long-serving volunteers for their dedication and contribution to the organisation. Wereldwinkel Wassenaar continues to rely on volunteers and welcomes new people interested in supporting fair-trade initiatives.
