Summer Festival brings music and family fun to Berkhei
The Fonds Wassenaar Summer Festival attracted visitors of all ages for an afternoon of live music, food and family activities at Berkhei.
Performances by Excelsior, De Drumgabbers, the Royal Police Band Haaglanden and country band TimberTown entertained the crowd, while children enjoyed a large inflatable obstacle course. The organisers thanked the many volunteers who helped make the free event possible.
New future for Auberge de Kieviet
The iconic Auberge de Kieviet in Wassenaar is set to reopen after six years of vacancy following its acquisition by property developer REBORN.
The historic building will be transformed into a five-star hotel with around 40 rooms, including a presidential suite, wellness facilities and space for business meetings and events. A restaurant led by a renowned Dutch chef is also planned, with the ambition of creating a high-quality destination that remains welcoming to local residents.
Construction is expected to begin in autumn 2026, with the renewed Auberge de Kieviet scheduled to open in early 2028.
Plein Musique returns this summer
Wassenaar’s popular Plein Musique concert series will return for its 22nd edition on 30 August and 6 September.
Free open-air concerts will take place on the Burchtplein from 2.00 pm until 5.30 pm on both Sundays, continuing a long-standing summer tradition in the village centre.
Filmhuis campaign puts shelter animals in the spotlight
Filmhuis Wassenaar and Stichting Nationale Dierenzorg have launched a special campaign to help shelter animals find a permanent home.
Visitors attending the film Gohan will meet six dogs and cats from the local shelter through photos shown before each screening. The campaign promotes the message “Adopt, don’t shop” and encourages people to consider adopting a pet from a shelter. An English-subtitled screening of Gohan will take place on 8 August.
Blendy opens after winning entrepreneurship campaign
Blendy will officially open its new shop in the Langstraat on 25 July after winning Wassenaar’s one-euro shop campaign.
Owner Fabi Fabrizi brings together premium coffees, teas and Belgian chocolate truffles inspired by flavours from around the world. Customers can even create their own personalised coffee blend.
Colourful artwork transforms utility building
A former grey electricity substation on the Deijlerweg has been transformed into a colourful work of art.
The mural was created by a group of refugees staying at Duinrell during a workshop led by artists Ruud Kooger and Tessa of Samesarts. The project highlights how art can bring people together and contribute to the local community.
Open-air opera comes to Wassenaar
The Baljuwhuis will host a contemporary production of The Beggar’s Opera on 23 August.
The classic eighteenth-century satire has been reimagined with a modern storyline and staging while retaining its original music by composers including Purcell and Handel.
