Welcome to the first edition of Wassenaar Weekly, a new feature from Wassenaarders.nl for our international community. Each week, we’ll bring you a short selection of local stories in English — about village life, events, culture, and politics — so you can stay connected with what’s happening in and around Wassenaar.

Municipal Council Approves 2026 Budget

After a lengthy debate, the Wassenaar municipal council approved its 2026 budget, with only Hart voor Wassenaarvoting against it.
Two motions passed — one securing the council’s role under the new Omgevingswet (Environmental Law), and another to provide more support for informal caregivers.

Alderman Laurens van Doeveren said the budget is “transparent and financially sound,” noting that Wassenaar remains healthy despite the expected challenges of 2026.

“We’ve achieved a lot in recent years,” he said. “From the revitalised village centre to new housing and investments in sports and culture.”

Nominate Your Favourite Local Entrepreneur

The Municipality of Wassenaar invites residents to nominate local entrepreneurs for special recognition on Entrepreneur’s Day, Friday 21 November.
Nominations — including the entrepreneur’s name and a short motivation — can be sent to communicatie@wassenaar.nl by Thursday, 13 November (1 p.m.).

Three entrepreneurs will be selected and honoured by Alderman Laurens van Doeveren during the 10-year anniversary celebration of Ondernemend Wassenaar on Thursday, 20 November.

Farewell to Duinrell’s Iconic ‘Kikkerachtbaan’

After 40 years of thrills, Duinrell’s legendary Kikkerachtbaan (Frog Roller Coaster) will make its final run on Sunday, 9 November.
The park will host a special farewell weekend (8–9 November) with festive activities.

General Director Philip van Zuylen van Nijevelt said:

“For many Dutch people, the Kikkerachtbaan was their very first roller coaster. We’re giving this classic the farewell it deserves.”

A new family coaster, also called Kikkerachtbaan, is being built by the original manufacturer, Zierer (Germany), and will open next season.

American School of The Hague Presents “The Spitfire Grill”

Students at the American School of The Hague (ASH) invite the community to their high school musical, “The Spitfire Grill.”
This moving story about renewal and belonging is performed in English on 21–23 November at the ASH Theater.

Tickets (€10, excl. fees) are available via bit.ly/HSTheaterASH.
The show combines acting, live music, and stagecraft — all created by students under professional guidance.

“It’s a story about acceptance and rebirth,” says Luke, one of the student actors. “It will hold a place in everyone’s heart.”
