New Housing Agreements Signed for 2026–2029
The Municipality of Wassenaar has signed new performance agreements with housing corporations and tenant organisations for the period 2026–2029.
The agreements focus on increasing the supply of affordable housing, with new developments aiming for 30% social housing and 40% mid-range or affordable ownership.
Other priorities include improving sustainability, enhancing liveability in neighbourhoods and supporting better housing options for older residents.
The cooperation between the municipality and housing partners is expected to play a key role in addressing housing shortages and demographic changes.
National Campaign Promotes Bicycle Helmet Use
On 15 April, the national road safety campaign “Zet ’m op!” was launched, encouraging cyclists to wear helmets.
Cycling remains highly popular in the Netherlands, but also comes with risks. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by around 60% and fatal injuries by up to 70%.
Alderman Wim Koetsier emphasised that while infrastructure improvements — such as the new 30 km/h speed limit — contribute to safety, cyclists themselves can also take responsibility by wearing helmets and staying alert in traffic.
Theater Warenar Presents Varied Spring Programme
Theater Warenar continues its spring season with a diverse programme of theatre, music and cabaret.
Highlights include the performance Dis Order by Cat Smits (15 April), a concert by flamenco group De Règâhs (sold out), and cabaret by Teun van den Elzen (also sold out).
In May, the programme features emerging talent, including the Cameretten Festival finalists and comedian Nabil.
The programme offers a mix of established names and new talent, appealing to a broad audience.
Filmhuis Wassenaar Looking for Volunteers
Filmhuis Wassenaar is looking for new volunteers, particularly for weekend shifts.
The organisation is seeking people aged 18+ who enjoy working with visitors, are comfortable using a computer-based ticket system, and like being part of a welcoming cultural environment.
Volunteers help create an enjoyable cinema experience — and of course get to enjoy films themselves.
Interested residents can apply via email or visit the library for more information.
Open Chess Evening at Deijlerhuis
An open and accessible chess evening will take place on Monday 20 April at Deijlerhuis.
The event features short, informal games (rapid chess), allowing participants to play multiple matches against different opponents. Players of all levels and ages are welcome, making it a social and inclusive evening.
Participation is free, and registration is possible in advance or on the night itself.
Save the Date: ‘De 15 van Wassenaar’ Returns
The popular running event “De 15 van Wassenaar” will take place on Sunday 11 October 2026.
This annual event combines sport, community spirit and charity. Participants can choose between distances of 15 km or 7.5 km, while also raising funds for local and national causes.
With around 1,200 expected participants and strong support from volunteers, sponsors and local organisations, the event has become a well-established highlight in Wassenaar’s sporting calendar.
