Plein Musique ends its 22nd edition on a high note
The 22nd edition of Plein Musique came to a close on Sunday with an afternoon of live music at the Burchtplein.
BombaNaranja took the audience on a musical journey with accordion and double bass, performing familiar songs in several languages and musical styles. They were followed by the TOTO Experience Tribute Band, bringing the music of American rock band Toto to a sunny Wassenaar.
Plein Musique will return next year.
First Wassenaar Golf Open attracts almost 160 players
The first Wassenaar Golf Open brought together almost 160 local golfers at the Haagsche Golf & Country Club and Wassenaarse Golfclub Rozenstein.
The tournament was open to golfers living in Wassenaar, regardless of whether they were members of either club. As part of the event, the organisers will also fund a golf clinic for 15 to 20 Wassenaar residents with disabilities, giving them the opportunity to try the sport free of charge.
Following the success of the inaugural tournament, the organisers plan to hold another Wassenaar Golf Open in 2027.
Car sharing on the rise in Wassenaar
The number of shared cars in Wassenaar has increased by 57 per cent compared with 2024. The municipality now has 11 shared cars.
The figures reflect a wider increase in car sharing across the Netherlands, with shared cars now available in 237 Dutch municipalities.
Several car-sharing options are available in Wassenaar, ranging from commercial providers to schemes in which neighbours, friends or family members share a vehicle.
Lighthouse Coffee plans to open in October
The small coffee house on Buurtweg is set to get a new lease of life. Wassenaar residents Alexander and Nadine Schuil have taken over the property and plan to open Lighthouse Coffee in October.
The family wants the coffee house to become more than simply a place to have a cup of coffee. Their aim is to create a meeting place for local residents, including walkers, runners, cyclists, museum visitors and families.
Lighthouse Coffee will operate on a non-profit basis. According to the owners, any profits will be donated to the Tanzanian Children’s Fund, a charity with which the family is closely involved. Some residents of Wassenaar’s asylum seekers’ centre are also expected to help at the coffee house.
An exact opening date has yet to be announced.
Van Wassenaer Orchestra prepares for 40th anniversary
Wassenaar’s own symphony orchestra, the Van Wassenaer Orkest, is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a special concert at the Messiaskerk on Sunday 15 November.
Named after Wassenaar composer Unico van Wassenaer, the orchestra will perform music by its namesake, as well as a concerto for two horns by Rosetti and Franz Schubert’s Third Symphony.
The orchestra, conducted by Dick Verhoef, is already rehearsing for the anniversary concert. In the weeks ahead, Wassenaarders.nl will also introduce some of the musicians behind the orchestra.
Messiaskerk Bazaar returns on 3 October
The annual Messiaskerk Bazaar will take place on Saturday 3 October from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm at the church on Zijllaan.
Visitors can browse stalls selling books, clothes, toys and household items, while food and drinks will also be available. The bazaar is organised with the help of volunteers from Wassenaar and the surrounding area.
Proceeds will support several charities and local organisations, including projects helping people in Eastern Europe, Long COVID research and the local Marcus Passie.
Mayor opens Wassenaar’s Open Monument Weekend
Mayor Leendert de Lange officially opened Wassenaar’s Open Monument Weekend at the Dorpskerk on Saturday morning. Together with Deputy Mayor Wendy Frigge, responsible for Culture and Heritage, he raised the flag to mark the start of a weekend in which many of Wassenaar’s historic buildings are opening their doors to visitors.
Historic estates, bunkers, windmills and churches are among the sites taking part. The mayor thanked Rotary Wassenaar, the Historical Association of Wassenaar, volunteers and property owners for making the weekend possible.
This year’s theme is Resilient Heritage. De Lange highlighted the Dorpskerk as an example of a historic building adapting to changing times. The church is preparing for a major sustainability project designed to ensure that the building can remain heated, sustainable and affordable to use in the future.
