Join NLdoet – The Netherlands’ Largest Volunteer Campaign

Residents are invited to participate in NLdoet, the country’s largest volunteer initiative, taking place on 13 and 14 March 2026.

The campaign offers a chance to support local organisations, from helping in care homes and community gardens to assisting initiatives that connect newcomers with the community. Even a single day of volunteering can make a meaningful difference.

NLdoet is organised nationwide by the Oranje Fonds. Residents can find activities and sign up online.

Free Compost on National Compost Day

As a thank-you for separating organic waste, residents of Wassenaar can collect free compost on Saturday 28 March at the Avalex environmental station on Hogeboomseweg.

By separating vegetable, fruit and garden waste (GFT), valuable compost and biogas are produced. A full 140-litre GFT bin can yield 15–20 kg of compost, contributing to healthier soil and reducing waste incineration.

📍 Location: Avalex Milieustraat Wassenaar
🕗 Time: 08:00–14:30

Visitors are advised to bring a sturdy bag or bucket — supplies are limited.

Explore Nature Responsibly in the Hollandse Duinen

Walking in nature is not only relaxing but also an opportunity to help protect wildlife. Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen, stretching along the coast between Hoek van Holland and Hillegom, shares several simple tips to make walks more nature-friendly.

Key advice includes:

  • Stay on designated paths to avoid disturbing animals and plants
  • Keep dogs on a leash to reduce stress for wildlife
  • Speak quietly and listen — you’ll notice more birds and other animals

By respecting these guidelines, visitors can enjoy the dunes while helping preserve this unique coastal ecosystem.

Election Debate Highlights Key Local Issues

With the municipal elections on 18 March approaching, the Grote Lijsttrekkersdebat (party leaders’ debate) took place at De Warenar, organised by the Vereniging van Vrienden van Wassenaar.

Before the debate, residents could speak with party representatives during a political market. During the discussion rounds, topics such as asylum policy, municipal spending and housing development sparked the most lively exchanges between candidates.

Further election debates are planned in the coming weeks, including a sports debate on 11 March and a regional broadcast debate on 15 March.

Video Interview Series with Party Leaders Begins

Starting this week, Wassenaarders.nl will publish a series of video interviews with party leaders ahead of the elections.

The interviews, conducted by Ellen Klaver-Asscheman, follow a fixed format so viewers can easily compare positions of the participating parties. Topics include housing, municipal finances, asylum policy and traffic pressure in the village.

Eight parties are taking part in the series; one party declined the invitation. The interviews will appear on the website and the Wassenaarders YouTube channel.
