New book brings Wassenaar’s heritage to life
The first copy of the new book Monumentaal Wassenaar was presented to Mayor Leendert de Lange during a gathering at the Messiaskerk.
Written by Robert van Lit and Albert Clobus and illustrated with photographs by Mariette van Lit, the bilingual book explores Wassenaar’s monuments and their history. Speakers at the presentation also stressed the importance of preserving the village’s rich cultural heritage.
Police find 57 dumped nitrous oxide cylinders
Police and municipal enforcement officers found 57 empty nitrous oxide cylinders dumped in a public area in Wassenaar.
Police are reminding residents that empty cylinders should be taken to the municipal recycling centre and should never be left on the street or placed with regular waste. Recreational use of nitrous oxide has been prohibited in the Netherlands since 2023.
Chess champion takes on challengers
Wassenaar Chess Club will hold its annual simultaneous chess event at the Deijlerhuis on 31 August.
Club champion Tomas Busser will take on up to twenty opponents at the same time. The event is open to both club members and non-members, and participation is free.
Legal dispute over Duindigt continues
The future of Duindigt racecourse remains uncertain as its management foundation and the Municipality of Wassenaar continue their legal dispute over the municipality’s right of first refusal.
The foundation wants the restriction removed so the site can be transferred to Stichting Villa Betty, which wants to invest in renovating the racecourse. The municipality says the measure is needed to retain control over the future of the area. The court is expected to rule within six weeks.
Ware Mix opens new theatre season
Theater Warenar will launch its 2026 to 2027 season with the traditional Ware Mix on 11 September.
The evening gives visitors a taste of the new season through surprise performances, trailers and video messages from artists. The programme in the following weeks includes a documentary about long covid, theatre, cabaret and live music.
