Young artists celebrated at Pauw Wow Show
Around 50 children took part in the Pauw Wow Show 2026, the annual youth art competition organised by the Wassenaar Cultural Prize Foundation.
This year’s theme, Step into the Time Machine, inspired participants to create imaginative artworks about the past and the future. During a festive award ceremony at the historic Hertenhuisje on the Backershagen estate, prizes were presented in several categories, while all participants were praised for their creativity and imagination.
Cycling challenge ends after accident in Finland
Wassenaar cyclist Leon Koning’s ambitious charity ride from the North Cape in Norway to Tarifa in Spain came to an unexpected halt after he was struck by a car in Finland.
Koning was airlifted to hospital and is recovering from several injuries. He had started the 7,400-kilometre solo challenge to raise money for the Duchenne Parent Project. Wassenaarders.nl previously spoke with Leon before his departure in a special video report.
Wassenaar explores new approach to asylum reception
The Municipality of Wassenaar is considering agreements with other municipalities that would allow it to continue accommodating asylum seekers while more recognised refugees are housed elsewhere.
According to Alderman Laurens van Doeveren, Wassenaar currently provides far more asylum reception places than required under national legislation. The proposal aims to reduce pressure on the municipality’s limited supply of social housing while maintaining its contribution to asylum reception.
Summer Festival promises music and family fun
The Fonds Wassenaar Summer Festival will take place on 12 July at the Berkhei market grounds.
Visitors can enjoy live performances by Excelsior Wassenaar, the Royal Police Band Haaglanden, country band Timber Town and several other musical acts. The festival will also feature food trucks, children’s activities and entertainment for all ages.
Baby born alongside the N44
Emergency services responded to an unusual call on 26 June when a woman went into labour while travelling by car on the N44.
With assistance from police officers and ambulance staff, a healthy baby boy was safely delivered at the roadside. Local residents also helped by bringing water and refreshments during the exceptionally warm weather. Both mother and baby are doing well.
Fashion Event brings colour to the village centre
The Langstraat was transformed into an open-air catwalk during Wassenaar’s annual Fashion Event.
Local fashion retailers presented their latest collections on a striking pink runway, while presenter Anne-Marie van Leggelo hosted two fashion shows. A mobile DJ and the nearby Puur Natuur Market helped create a lively atmosphere. Wassenaarders.nl was there to capture the event in a video report.
